We are slaves because we have made ourselves slaves. We follow, we imitate, we set up authorities, while tradition, belief, division in society, nationalities, have bound the mind in thought and emotion. The individual has merely conformed while in his world of action he has built for himself a false security. There is no security in a relative world, it is an illusion.
People are constantly trying to become virtuous, and we are caught up in the process which denies understanding. Controlling our minds is an unnecessary effort, which brings fear and limitations, because our minds are dominated by the idea of an escape from our conditioning which we fear.
What happens when an idea comes into our mind, do we not try to brush it aside so as to escape from its influence? But its influence still remains because it is not understood. When our thoughts are not understood and dealt with, we struggle, we condemn, we blame, and then we try to force our attention upon a particular idea in opposition to our conditioning, thereby creating further conflict. Don't we see that our thinking is caught up in a useless struggle which can never be creative.
